Art

The art rooms at Ashland Elementary School are wonderful places for preschool through fifth grade students to be creative and explore different forms of art. Students come to art once a week and receive instruction in the areas of art history, art production, aesthetics, and art criticism.

Our Mission

Our mission is to equip every child with the art skills that allow them to create and express themselves creatively. We integrate every art lesson with core subject areas and specific learning standards to help children connect classroom learning.

Frequently Asked Art Questions

What types of materials are used in the art room?

We use a variety of materials, most of which are consumable. We go through a lot of paints, pastels, markers, and paper. We also use craft materials when we study folk art and modeling clays for 3D projects. You never know what might show up in the art room!

Where is my child's artwork?

Sometimes we mount or frame artwork for display. This artwork will eventually make its way home; it just takes a little time. Other times, we experiment with new technique so there is no final take-home project. We attempt to ensure that all artwork finds its way home by the end of the semester.

What can I do to foster my child's creativity?

Let your child create. A lot of people think children shouldn’t be told what to create, but most need help finding a starting point. In my experience, students always have the most trouble with "free draw" assignments. Give your children space, materials, and visual ideas, and sit back and watch them create.

How can I get involved?

We always need art room volunteers! Let us know when and where you’d like to help or if you have any special skills you’d like to share. We will put you to work! (All AES volunteer requirements/rules apply. For more information, please review the information on our Get Involved page.
