We encourage our students to come to school on time every day; however, we know that illness sometimes prevents their attendance. If your child will be absent from school, please report his/her absence by leaving a message on our school sick line at (804) 365-4644 prior to 9:00 a.m. Please give the student’s name, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence when you call. If we do not receive a message, you will receive an automated call informing you that your child is absent from school. Upon your child’s return to school, please send a written note explaining your child’s absence.
When your child is absent, we must receive communication within three days of the absence for it to be recorded as “excused”. Absences that are not substantiated by a note or phone call to the office within three days of the absence will remain “unexcused.”
- At five unexcused absences, you will be contacted to develop an attendance plan to resolve attendance concerns.
- At seven unexcused absences, an attendance conference will be held to discuss continued attendance concerns.
- If attendance does not improve, a referral may be made to school social work services for additional support.
When your child misses five and/or 10 days, an attendance letter will be sent home to inform you of the number of full day absences from school. The attendance letters are for excused and unexcused absences. If you notice any of the listed dates as having a (u) beside them, those are currently unexcused days. We understand that there may be times your child needs to stay at home due to illness. It is very important that you notify the school of the absence. After 10 excused or unexcused absences, medical documentation for absences may be required to excuse future absences.
If you feel that there is something else keeping your child from attending school (anxiety, stress, friendships, etc.) or if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out Mrs. Astrouski.
