Attendance

Kids yelling at pep rally

Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. Students should attend school every day unless they are ill or have an excused absence. A student is considered chronically absent after missing 18 or more days during the school year, whether absences are excused or unexcused. Per HCPS policy, a formal letter will be shared when your child reaches five absences. When your child reaches 10 absences, a formal letter will be shared with you requiring medical notes to excuse further absences.

Please Remember

  • Notify the office when your child is absent. Absences may be reported directly to Nurse Howell through ParentSquare or by leaving a message on the sick line at 804-365-4621. Absences may be reported directly to Family Engagement Specialist Chelsea Moody by calling 804-365-4584 or sending an email or parent square message with documentation.
  • Submit documentation for excused absences.
  • Arrive on time each day.
  • Excessive tardies and absences may result in interventions as outlined by district policy.
  • After 10 total absences (excused or unexcused), future absences due to illness or healthcare appointments must be supported by a healthcare note.
  • When attendance concerns arise, the school attendance team will partner with families to develop interventions and address barriers to regular attendance.

Tardies

Students arriving after the instructional day begins must be checked in through the front office. An adult must accompany the child into the office to sign them in using our electronic sign-in form.

Make-Up Work

  • Students who are absent due to illness will receive their makeup work upon returning to school. They will be allotted two school days for each day of absence to complete and submit missed assignments.
  • For planned extended absences, such as family vacations, makeup work will generally be provided upon the student's return to school. In some cases, teachers may be able to provide certain assignments in advance; however, the majority of coursework will be distributed after the student returns.
